With a swift movement of his hand, the tie flies across the room and lands in the large pile of discarded clothes. Yet another item of clothing that would not work with his outfit. Why was this so difficult?

Levi sighs and goes to hunt deeper in his closet for something that would make his attire more presentable. After staring at himself in the full-body mirror for a minute, his pale and slender fingers tug down on the crisp edge of his collared shirt. He then runs his hands over the small, white buttons in order to smooth out nonexistent wrinkles.

The phone sitting on the glass table behind him begins to vibrate.

         “Hello?”

“Heyyyy shorty. You on your way? I cooked up a mean bolognese and Nile says it’s actually edible! Can you believe it? Like he didn’t barf when he tried it!”

A rough chuckle scratches the back of Levi’s throat. “Th-That’s amazing, Hanji. At least we know we won’t fucking choke… haha, right?”

“Oh shut up!” Static buzzes and silence takes the line. “Hey, so who’s this girl you’re bringing? Cause like you mentioned a someone, but you were talking so fast when you were explaining everything.” The line goes quiet again, raising goosebumps on the back of Levi’s neck.

He licks his lips and hesitates. “Um, well, she’s… a friend. It was a last minute thing, thanks to your terrible fucking last minute planning and she was available. Don’t worry about it and don’t be a fucking weirdo around her.”

         “A weirdo? Me? Never.”

         “Hanji, quit your shit lies.”

“I’ll see you later tonight then!”

“By-,” but the line disconnects before Levi can finish his word. A sigh escapes his lips as he sets down the device.

Levi fixes his collar once more before running a hand through his freshly blow dried hair. “So then, (F/n). You… You are looking pretty. Left the shitty scarf at home?”  He flashes himself a  lopsided grin and raises one of his thin eyebrows. Disgusted, Levi lets the muscles in his face relax. “Fucking idiot, what the shit am I thinking?”

The phone vibrates again, but this time, it is a text that appears on the homescreen. As he reaches for the device, another message alert sounds.

(F/N) (L/N)
Just making sure you’re not
bailing on me last minute.

It took me over two hours
to do my hair and makeup.
That is not going to waste.

LEVI
No, I’ll be there. You didn’t
have to get so dressed up.

(F/N) (L/N)
Oh ok good, thank you. And
I don’t know, I just like getting
dressed up all fancy. I’ll see you
there then!

Levi slips the phone in his pants pocket and decides against a tie. Too formal. It was only a dinner. No need to dress up like it was a  ball. He takes hold of the neatly wrapped box and forces himself to leave the apartment without changing anything else about his appearance.

The car comes to a complete stop across from the mechanic’s shop just as the digital clock on the dashboard changes to show 5:45. Perhaps he left a little too early. But one could never be too safe, no?

Levi sits in the driver’s seat in complete silence; not even the radio was on. He can not keep still though. He bounces his shoes against the brake and gas pedals while his fingers trill atop the steering wheel. As the minutes crawl by, Levi’s heart beat pounds faster. But why? Was he nervous? No. Levi rarely let his nerves bet the best of him.

When a sharp knock sounds at the window, Levi nearly jumps out of his seat.

“Hi!” You giggle and nod your head towards the door handle. “You going to let me in or no?” The smile never leaves your face, making Levi’s mind stop for a split second.

Your hair frames your face, your eyelashes are curled to perfection, and your lips look plumper than Levi had seen before. The short-sleeve dress you wore hugged you in all the best places, but did not let anything spill over the top. In short, you looked stunning.

He choked on his voice before he could find words. “Y-Yeah, sorry.”

The locks click, you open the door and take a seat.

Levi starts the engine, and the two of you are off.

Hanji opens the door before Levi has the chance to press the bell. “Hello you two! Welcome to Chateau Hanji and Nile! Please come in.” She steps out of the way to allow you and Levi into the house. Throwing her head back, Hanji yells for Nile. “Oi! Mr. Retracting Hairline! Our guests are here, so get your ass in here!”

         “Who’s talking, Four-Eyes?”

         “I will fuck you up!”

“Will I mind though?” he teases in response, appearing from the kitchen. “Levi! How’ve you been?” His eyes flicker to you and his smile fades from his lips. “Hello. You must be Levi’s plus one. I am Nile. Nile Dok. And my wife, Hanji Zoe.” He lowers his voice and presses his hands over Hanji’s ears. “She’s a right crazy one, she is.”

To add to Nile’s statement, Hanji turns her head to lick his finger.

         “Down, Hanji!”

She laughs before pulling you and Levi into the living room. “So let’s talk a little while the food cooks itself. How did you guys meet? Did Shorty here bump into you?”

“Shitty Glasses,” Levi warns, brows furrowing.

“Aw common, Levi! Tell me.” Her eyes sparkle just as bright has her smile.

         “Wel,-”

“(F/n) (L/n). We met in a hardware store, believe it or not. Levi needed some help looking for materials and I happened to be covering for a coworker out sick… I had a sucky date the other night and Levi offered me the chance to come here.”

Both Hanji and Nile blink at your blunt description of what happened over the course of the past week.

Levi bites on his bottom lip and looks down, waiting for one of the two to scold him.

“Shorty must have taken a liking to you then! He doesn’t really do too great with people. Kinda antisocial really. Nice to have you here, (F/n). I hope my cooking doesn’t turn your stomach upside down, as it is known to do usually. I haven’t killed anyone yet, so I do believe you are safe enough.”

Just as she finishes her sentence, the fire alarm begins to chirp in the kitchen, making everyone jump in surprise.

“I think you jinxed it, love,” Nile says, rushing to the hallway.

Hanji motions for you and Levi to sit back down. “He’s got it. Let’s chat some.”

After about five minutes of continuous beeping, Nile returns to the living room wearing a solemn expression. “I don’t suppose you know how to fix a fire alarm, do you (F/n)? I hate to ask for your help when you’re a guest, but I think we’d all like to enjoy the rest of the night without the constant ER ER ER of that thing in our ears.”

Levi’s eyes fall on you. When your gazes lock for a moment, he nods approvingly.

Smile on your face, you stand and follow Nile. “I’ve tampered with a few of the buggers in my time. Let’s see what’s wrong with this guy.”

Hanji falls silent and stares blankly at her hands. When Levi clears his throat, she looks up and grins softly. “What’s that you got there, Shorty?” She nods at the perfectly wrapped gift Levi nearly forgot in the car.

         “It’s for you.”

She laughs. “For me? Since when do you bring housewarming gifts for your hosts?”

He stands and shoves the box into her hands. “Open it.”

Now wearing a more serious expression, Hanji replies, “Alright, alright, don’t get your balls in a knot.” Her fingers pull apart the tape carefully, knowing Levi hated when people ripped through packaging. As her eyes rake over the clear packaging and peer inside, her mouth contorts into a surprised look. She then pushes the present back into Levi’s hands.

“No! I can’t take that. Levi… why did you… get that for me?”

Levi strums his fingers against the reflective golden plastic that says LIMITED EDITION before locking gazes with the plastic eyes of the titan figurine. “But-But I got it for you…”

         “How much was it?”

         “It was nothing, really.”

“Levi,” Hanji presses, voice growing on edge.

“I’ve gone through too much shit for you to not take it. So, just fucking accept it,” he hisses back, eyes still glued to the toy as his hands pushed it outwards.

“Whatever you went through is on you, not me. Don’t turn it around and pin it on me!”

He replies too quickly. “It’s always on you… It’s always been… you.” Heart pounding like a drum, Levi tips his head up slowly to meet gazes with a very worried Hanji. She is never this tense; this is a position she does not like and she is very uncomfortable.

She opens her mouth to respond only to be cut off by you and Nile walking into the living room. “We’ve managed to set the table and everything. If you guys will join us, we can start eating!” you announce, smiling at Levi.

“Whoever lives to the end of the night without dying from Hanji’s food can take home leftovers!”

Making conversation around the dinner table proves very difficult; at first, you, Hanji, and Nile were talking over each other and no one could be heard properly. It wasn’t until Levi commented on something in a low and sombre tone did the talk die out.

Nile takes a bite of the surprisingly edible spaghetti and  tries to speak at the same time. “So (F/n) mentioned she worked on a base around the same time as you and Levi. You guys didn’t happen to cross paths did you? Imagine that, the three of you knowing each other before now and not even knowing it! That would be a coincidence.”

You shake your head. “The chances of that are closer to zero than anything. I was filling in for someone else on a different base because they got the nasty bug that was going around. I wasn’t even supposed to be there in the first place. From there, you’d have to zone in on the sections we were assigned to work among; the base was so large, section letters ran from Alfa to Whiskey. It took me forever to find Foxtrot, I nearly walked into like four other stations!”

As you speak, Levi’s head slowly lifts to watch you. Coincidence, much?

Levi clears his throat. “And how long did it take for you to clean the blood from the walls?”

“Gosh, it must have taken me hours! I tried probably four different chemicals before nearly giving up when someone suggested… I… try…”

“Hydrogen peroxide. Universal cleaner,” Levi finishes for you.

Hanji drops her fork and her mouth falls open, a string of pasta falling out of her mouth. “WAIT. YOU WERE THERE? WHEN THAT POOR KID BASICALLY KNOCKED THE ENTIRE LEFT SIDE OF HIM TO PIECES? HOLY SHIT, NO WAY!”

You are at a loss for words. “But at the shop.. You said you’ve never been in the army. Why lie?”

“I don’t like to talk about those days.”

Understanding his point, you back down and leave the topic to rest. Hanji is the one to poke and prod at the subject further.

“I’m still trying to wrap my head around this. When did you leave the base?”

“Hanji,”Levi warns, hand tightening around the fork.”

But she continues to speak. “Like Levi and I only got out after the war.”

         “Hanji.”

“We lost some amazing friends, bu,-”

“DID YOU NOT FUCKING HEAR ME? I DO NOT WANT TO TALK ABOUT THOSE TIMES. JUST LEAVE IT AT THAT, WILL YOU?”

With that, Levi storms out of the dining room and to the backyard to get some air.

The three of you left fall silent suddenly until you scrape your chair back and clear your throat. “I’ll go and fetch him.”

Hanji puts a hand over yours.

“Please… be gentle with him. He’s not the same person he once was…”

You nod understandingly before going outside.

Levi leans against the railing and overlooks the city, scowl on his porcelain face. He breathes heavily, chest rising and falling with every gulp of air he inhales. He buries his face into his hands and then closes his eyes.

Walking up to him quietly, you brace yourself against the balcony railing next to him. “You alright there?”

He glares at you with a cold stare.

A laugh passes your lips. “Sorry. You’re right. I didn’t mean it like that. I just… wanted to make sure you’re alright. I know what it’s like to lose someone close to you,” you say, biting your bottom lip. “Maybe not to the magnitude you know the pain, but I am aware it hurts.”

Oddly enough, as you speak, Levi finds your words comforting him. Just the sound of your voice manages to calm his heartbeat down to a reasonable rate. Slowly, Levi releases his harsh grip on the metal bars. He looks up at the moon and sighs, silencing you.

A chuckle tickles the back of your throat. “I never really thought much about it, but I think I had a crush on you all those years ago… even though basically everyone hated you.”

Levi raises an eyebrow at you.

“I mean, you had some admirers because of your handsome looks, but I liked you because you were honest.”

“Was it you that I told off about wearing blue eyeshadow?”

You nod. “And I’ve never worn it since.”

The two of you share an uneasy laugh before a silence settles.

Suddenly, Levi’ asks bluntly, “Why are you here?”

         “What do you mean?”

The man runs a hand through his hair before playing with some vines. “Of all things you could have been doing tonight and you’re here with me. Why?”

You turn and press the small of your back to the edge. “When you asked me to come and help you out, I saw the pain and hurt in your eyes… you were almost giving me every sombre thought you had in you. It was… overwhelming.”

A crude laugh resonates in Levi’s throat. “So you came with me out of pity?”

“No! No… I mean I kind of did… but don’t get me wrong, I’ve been having a great time up to now. Your friends are very kind. Thank you for inviting me.”

Levi glaces at you, watching as the moonlight lights up different parts of your face as you move. Why do you continue to mesmerize and surprise him?

You nearly jump when he takes your hand in his. After a moment passes, your fingers relax against his skin.

The night is calm and so are the two of you.

Hanji pulls Levi to the side and whispers harshly, “Have you spoken with Dr. Zackly lately?”

He watches as you and Nile finish your conversation, the night time breeze tugging your hair forward.

         “I’m good.”

She sighs. “That’s not what I asked, Levi. Don’t avoid my question.”

Levi tips his head up. “I’m fine. Really.”

With that, Hanji nods. “Thank you for the titan, Levi.”

He offers her a soft smile.

The short man opens the door for you.

“Thank you two for coming, hope tomorrow goes not greet you with stomach pains and vomiting!” Nile wishes the two of you as the car rolls down the large driveway.

The car is silent until Levi clears his throat and speaks. “Would you care for some ice cream to end the evening? I noticed you didn’t like that rum cake very much.”

You shake your head. “I don’t want to keep you out too late.”

         “It’s no bother. I know a place.”

Levi’s legs dangle off the sea wall, ice cream in his hand. Eyes glued to the dark waves lapping at the shores, he asks, “What flavor did you get there, brat?”

“You know,” you say, taking another bite of your cold treat, “you’d be more liked if you don’t call everyone ‘brat’ or use all the curses of the rainbow the first time you meet them. Just saying. I mean your friends might know that it’s a part of your colourful personality, but still.”

A breeze blows between the two of you, sending goosebumps down your bare arms. You shiver and rub your hands together.

The dark haired man scoffs and scoots closer to you. “I should have brought my jacket, I fucking knew it. I was going to wear one but then I jus,-”

Before he can finish his sentence, you turn and press your mouth to his. When Levi does not return the kiss, you sit up straight and cough, your cheeks flushing crimson. “S-Sorry… I don’t know what I was thinking…” You stand to leave, but Levi’s hand tugs on your wrist, forcing you back down.

His fingers curl around your jaw, pulling you towards him until your lips meet once more. After an awkward moment, Levi’s lips fall in sync with yours. His hands snake around your waist to draw you in closer, your two bodies exchanging warmth. He scoots back, off the edge, and pulls you onto his lap.

Your hands run through his hair as fingers dance across the fabric of your dress. Levi pulls back and leans his forehead against yours, nose touching your own. “Mint chocolate crunch. That’s what you fucking got?”

“Are you hating on me, Mr. Vanilla Bean?”

A laugh echos from Levi, grin capturing his lips. “Maybe if I taste again, I’ll change my mind.”

“Just promise me one thing, alright?”

Levi’s eyes flicker up to yours, moonlight glinting in the flakes of silver among the seas of gunmetal. He is genuinely happy.

“Stay with me, alright? No running off to a place above us too early, do you hear me? ”

He hugs you tightly, burying his nose into your shoulder. “Fucking brat.”

         “I promise,” he whispers.

Leaning against Levi for warm, you look up at the sky and sigh. Your stomach flips and butterflies beat against the organs’ walls.

“Are your intestines complaining about Shitty Glasses’ food?”

“No, the food wasn’t bad actually.”

The day you can actually cook is the day I fall in love with someone. Levi coughs on his plastic spoon.

“What about you there?” you chuckle, patting him on the back.

Levi smirks. “Just thought of something I said.”

Part Two: Reader x Levi - AU!The One That Got Away
Part Three: Here

I believe the message that resonates through this piece and the short film that inspired me is very important. It is difficult to feel appreciated in this day and age; being neglected for so long can lead people to a breaking point. Random acts of kindness can provide others with a sparkle of hope that has the possibility to kindle and grow.

On a side note, the video inspiration is from BuzzFeed. Some have been saying that the entertainment and news source has been losing ideas. Though this seems true in some ways, I believe that this particular piece and its sequel are very moving and carry strong messages.

This is my third and final part to the mini series for  :iconsassy-but-classy: 's competition. I hope you enjoy it!

I do not own the picture.
I do not own Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan).
